In the first instalment of this series of Short Story Masterclass podcasts, Jac Cattaneo talks with award-winning author Michel Faber about keeping the reader in safe hands, writers making things up, sadness and poignancy, and stories determining their own lengths.
Born in Holland, raised in Australia and now living in the Scottish Highlands, Michel Faber is a highly acclaimed author of both long and short fiction. His short stories have won several awards, including the Macallan/Scotland on Sunday Short Story Competition, the Ian St. James Awards and the Neil Gunn Writing Competition, whilst his novel Under the Skin was shortlisted for the Whitbread Prize.
Faber’s short stories are collected in The Fahrenheit Twins, Some Rain Must Fall and The Apple, a book of stories based on his celebrated novel The Crimson Petal and the White. His latest novel, The Book of Strange New Things, was published in October 2014 by Canongate Books.
