In the final instalment of this series of Short Story Masterclass podcasts, Jac Cattaneo talks with award-winning author Marina Warner about the domestic in fairy tales, rewriting and re-imagining myths, and balancing research with imagination.
Marina Warner was awarded a CBE for services to Literature in 2008 and is an internationally acclaimed author, critic and cultural historian. Her award-winning studies of mythology and fairy tales include Stranger Magic: Charmed States & the Arabian Nights – awarded both the Sheikh Zayed Book Award and the Truman Capote Award for Literary Criticism in 2013 – From the Beast to the Blonde – on Fairy Tales and their Tellers and, in 2014, Once Upon a Time: A Short History of Fairy Tale. Warner’s fiction translates, or revisions, these studies of art, myths, symbols and fairy tales. Her most recent publication, and third short story collection, Fly Away Home: Stories, has been long-listed for the 2016 Edge Hill Short Story Award.
