David Constantine is the author of three highly acclaimed short story collections, Back at the Spike (Keele University Press, 1994), Under the Dam (Comma Press, 2005) and The Shieling (Comma Press, 2009), as well as a novel, several volumes of original poetry, poetry translations, and a number of academic titles. His story ‘Tea at the Midland’ won the BBC National Short Story Award for 2010.
In an interview with Benedicte Page, published in the Guardian after winning the prize, Constantine compared his approach to story writing with the way he writes poetry, saying ‘I don’t write the sort of short stories that people who are interested in plot do. It starts with an image that is potent to me and I don’t know where that will take me.’
