In the second instalment of this series of Short Story Masterclass podcasts, Jac Cattaneo talks with acclaimed author Salley Vickers about psychology and the short story, anarchy, maternal betrayal, tapping into unlived lives, and the misunderstandings of human relationships.
Salley Vickers was born in Liverpool in 1948. She read English at Newnham College Cambridge and later worked a variety of jobs – as a cleaner, a dancer, a teacher of children with special needs, and a psychoanalyst – before becoming a full time writer and lecturer. Vickers’ first novel, Miss Garnet’s Angel, was an international ‘word-of-mouth’ bestseller. Other works include Mr. Golightly’s Holiday, The Other Side of You and Where Three Roads Meet, a retelling of the Oedipus myth to Sigmund Freud in the last months of his life. Her most recent publication is the short story collection The Boy Who Could See Death. In this podcast, Vickers reads from the collection’s title story and ‘The Train That Left When It Was Not Supposed To’.
